En Fuego has long been known as a Del Mar hot
spot, which is one reason why its name is so fitting. Loosely
translated as On Fire, En Fuego is the place to be on
a sunny afternoon or after work for happy hour or a cozy dinner
outside under one of their heat lamps.
En Fuego burst onto the scene in 1930, then known as
La Tienda. Famous for their tangy margaritas and South of the Border
fare, En Fuego serves up spicy numbers like grilled chicken chili
rellenos, shredded pork tamales, grilled calamari tortas and carne
asada burritos. Choose from five tasty fajitas, six salads, and
lots of tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas.
John Wingate, owner of En Fuego, knew what he was doing
when in 1995, he opened his doors for business on opening day at
the Del Mar Race Track, making this
popular day in Del Mar an anniversary for one of its
most endearing restaurants.
En Fuego continues to do a brisk business, especially on Taco Tuesdays;
when gitty diners help themselves to mahi mahi tacos and rolled
beef tacos for $3.00 and chicken and black bean tacos for $2.00,
washing it all down with their favorite 'rita, perhaps a Bubbas
Margarita or the Legendary Mango Margarita.
