KCs Tandoor
The chef at KCs Tandoor, Kamlani Israni, is also the
owner. She has been in business for fourteen years and during that time,
she has kept the same kitchen staff. After expanding from one to three
locations, some of her former employees now own two of the restaurants
that were originally hers. KCs Tandoor was the first Indian fast
food restaurant in San Diego and Kamlani began this business so that she
could make Indian food available to all. The entrees are priced in the
8-15 dollor range , but very reasonable for the quality of food.
The kitchen itself is immaculate, and so is the cozy indoor dining area
which is delightfully decorated with a theme that fuses modern minimalism
with a sense of traditional Indian culture. There is an outside patio
area.
A vegetarian herself, Kamlani has created a menu with an high number
of vegetarian dishes and her signature curries can all be made with vegetables,
chicken, lamb or seafood. Kamlani uses locally grown organic vegetables
and upon request will use Halal meat for catered orders. Growing up in
India, Kamlani learned to cook from her father. Her specialty dishes,
listed on the menu as kcs signature curries and supreme salads,
are delicious family recipes that she is constantly fine tuning based
on customer feedback.
Many of her dishes feature meats so tender they almost fall apart in
the various uniquely flavored sauces. KCs Tandoor most popular dish
is chicken tikka masala and this is no surprise considering that the chicken,
tender and almost falling apart, is also deliciously seasoned with herbs.
Unlike other Indian restaurants, KCs Tandoor carries not only
the more popular North Indian dishes such as lamb vindaloo and their signature
curries but also the more spicy South Indian dishes some of which are
served with a rice based crepe. The menu is varied enough for even the
pickiest eaters and the chef is happy to make any of the dishes as spicy
as mild as desired
Open Monday through Saturday, 11am to 9pm, and Monday through Sunday beginning
in May, KCs Tandoor is tucked into a large strip mall making it
a little difficult to find. This location is a not so well kept secret
frequented by Indian nationals seeking a taste of home and internationally
known celebrities alike. KCs Tandoor brings to the American fast
food industry quality food, served by courteous staff in a clean environment.
Traditional India meets modern America both in KCs Tandoor and in
Kamlani herself who is passionate about bringing tasty meals to her customers.
